WhatsApp is working on a new privacy feature that will allow users to hide their phone numbers in select situations. The update, spotted in the beta version for Android (v2.24.11.70), aims to enhance user privacy during interactions with unknown contacts in Communities or large group chats.
With this feature, users will have the option to restrict their phone number visibility, revealing it only when necessary or manually permitted. While the number remains hidden, the user can still send and receive messages seamlessly.
This move is part of WhatsApp’s broader push to offer tighter privacy controls, especially in scenarios where users interact with unfamiliar members. It mirrors a growing trend among messaging platforms to prioritise user anonymity and control.
The feature is expected to roll out gradually following successful beta testing. There is no official launch date yet.
