Apple pushes back on EU demand to open iOS compatibility, says order unreasonable

Apple has filed a legal appeal against the European Union's directive mandating increased interoperability of its iOS ecosystem with rival products. The company contends that the EU's requirements are "unreasonable," potentially compromising user privacy and stifling innovation.

The European Commission's order, rooted in the Digital Markets Act, compels Apple to grant third-party manufacturers access to key iOS features, including Wi-Fi, NFC, and notification systems. Apple argues that such access could expose sensitive user data to competitors like Meta and Google, posing significant privacy risks.

In a statement, Apple emphasized that these "deeply flawed rules" unfairly single out the company, potentially degrading the user experience for European customers. Despite initiating legal proceedings, Apple is obligated to comply with the EU's mandate during the litigation process.

The Commission maintains that its directive aims to foster fair competition and enhance consumer choice within the digital market. The legal dispute underscores the ongoing tension between major tech firms and regulatory bodies over market dominance and user data protection.
