World Diabetes Day: High Blood Sugar Can Be The Underlying Cause For Heart Disease, Know How

High blood sugar from Diabetes mellitus can quietly damage the heart and blood vessels and is increasingly recognised as a key contributor to cardiovascular disease. Excess glucose in the body wears down the lining of blood vessels and interferes with nerve signals to the heart, promoting stiffening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis). It also fuels the buildup of fatty plaques by altering cholesterol levels, higher bad (LDL) and triglycerides, lower good (HDL), which can obstruct coronary arteries and raise risk of heart attacks and strokes. Beyond that, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation can weaken the heart muscle itself (a condition known as diabetic cardiomyopathy) and lead to arrhythmia and heart failure. In short: controlling blood sugar isn’t just about avoiding diabetes-related blindness or organ damage, it’s also a critical step in protecting your heart.
