Skipping breakfast and eating dinner late? Your bones might pay the price

A recent large-scale study from Japan has revealed that skipping breakfast and eating dinner late at night may significantly increase the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and makes them prone to fractures. Researchers examined data from over 9.27 lakh adults and found that irregular eating patterns, especially skipping morning meals or dining close to midnight, were closely linked to a higher incidence of bone fractures, including those of the hip, forearm, spine, and upper arm. The findings suggest that such habits disrupt the body’s natural circadian rhythm, affecting nutrient absorption and bone metabolism. Experts warn that combining late-night eating or breakfast skipping with sedentary lifestyles, smoking, lack of exercise, and poor sleep further worsens bone health over time. Maintaining a consistent meal schedule, ensuring adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, staying active, and sleeping well are essential steps to keep bones strong and lower the risk of osteoporosis.
