People with anxiety often interpret language through a heightened emotional lens, making certain everyday phrases potentially triggering or dismissive. Mental health experts advise steering clear of common expressions that, while seemingly harmless, can worsen anxious thoughts or feelings.
Phrases like “Calm down,” “You’re overthinking,” or “It’s all in your head” may come across as invalidating. Similarly, urging someone to “Just let it go” or asking “Why are you so anxious?” can unintentionally deepen their distress. These statements may imply blame or diminish their emotional experience, increasing self-doubt.
Instead, supportive language that acknowledges their feelings and offers reassurance can create a more compassionate dialogue. Listening without judgment and using phrases like “I’m here for you” can make a meaningful difference. Recognising the power of words is essential in fostering mental wellness and understanding.
