Aamir Khan Champions Authenticity in 'Sitaare Zameen Par' Casting

Casting director Tess Joseph says Aamir Khan played a pivotal but unobtrusive role in casting neurodivergent actors for Sitaare Zameen Par, the spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par. Joseph, a dyslexic herself, recalls the eight-month audition process, which featured over a thousand submissions of children showcasing dance, mime and monologues. Joseph notes that the team prioritized presence and joy over scripted lines, drawing candidates from across India including Kerala, Delhi and Bengaluru via schools, therapists and open calls. Aamir, she says, partnered closely: reviewing tapes, conducting workshops and offering feedback without imposing creative control, a decision Joseph calls “rare for someone of his stature”. Joseph believes their inclusive casting approach, rooted in patience and empathy, will break new ground, offering genuine representation for neurodivergent performers in Hindi cinema.
