Rajinikanth is all about the drama. His upcoming film, Coolie, has already proven that — because the drama hasn’t even begun yet, and the box office is already sweating bullets. With only four days to go before release, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action spectacle has raked in a mind-blowing ₹50+ crore in advance bookings worldwide. Now that’s a hype train that’s only picking up speed.
The international ticket frenzy kicked off before India even got a look in, and the overseas crowd went wild. In India, bookings opened in phases from Friday, and domestic numbers have already hit ₹14 crore — with a whopping ₹10 crore secured for opening day. Naturally, the Tamil version is leading with nearly ₹10 crore, Telugu and Kannada dubs are warming up strong, and the Hindi version is saving its sprint for the last lap.
Across the ocean, Coolie is smashing records like it’s a sport. North America alone has notched up USD 1.7 million (₹14 crore) in premiere sales, with USD 1.45 million from the USA — that’s over 56,000 tickets sold before a single reel has rolled. It even leapfrogged the premiere record of Kanagaraj’s own Leo and has already pulled ₹41 crore overseas, more than Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life managed in its entire foreign run.
Back home, it’s crushed Jailer’s ₹18 crore advance booking record and could very well double its numbers before the August 14 release. And with a cast featuring Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, plus a surprise cameo from Aamir Khan, this is pure pan-India fireworks.
If this momentum holds, Coolie won’t just be Rajinikanth’s biggest opening — it could easily etch its name among the largest openings in Indian cinema history. Curtain up can’t come soon enough.
