Centre hikes excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre, no increase in retail prices

The Indian government has increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre, effective April 7, 2025. This move is expected to impact fuel prices across the country, with the new rates likely to be reflected at petrol pumps. The central government's decision to hike excise duty will add to the already high fuel prices, which are influenced by various factors including crude oil costs, Value-Added Tax (VAT), and dealer's commission. Currently, the central excise duty stands at ₹19.90 per litre for petrol and ₹15.80 per litre for diesel.
