Turkey’s transport minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu fined after ..

Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu recently found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons when a video surfaced online showing him driving at nearly double the national speed limit. On the Ankara–Niğde motorway, where the legal cap is 140 km per hour, the minister’s vehicle was clocked between 190 and 225. The clip quickly went viral, sparking both outrage and amusement, until Uraloğlu himself stepped in to confirm the violation. He paid a fine of 9,267 Turkish lira—nearly twenty thousand rupees—and acknowledged that road rules apply equally to everyone, promising greater caution in the future.

The incident comes at a time when Turkey is grappling with sobering road safety statistics. This year alone, over 1.5 million accidents have already been recorded, leading to more than 6,000 fatalities. Unsurprisingly, the minister’s speeding spree has reignited debate about accountability and the example set by those in public office.

Adding a twist of irony, the motorway in question is one of Turkey’s flagship infrastructure projects, a 275-kilometre stretch (over 330 with connectors) closely associated with Uraloğlu himself, who once headed the country’s highway authority. What was meant to be a symbol of modern engineering and connectivity has now doubled as the backdrop of a political embarrassment.

Yet in an odd way, the episode has achieved something rare in politics: a moment of humility. By paying his fine publicly and conceding fault, Uraloğlu reminded citizens that no official is above the law—even if it took a viral video and a burst of high-octane recklessness to make the point.
