U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has renewed his call for a four-day workweek, arguing that time saved through artificial intelligence advancements should directly benefit employees, not just corporations.
Speaking at a Senate committee hearing, Sanders stressed that while AI boosts productivity, its rewards must be fairly distributed. “If new technologies allow companies to do more with less time, workers deserve shorter workweeks with no pay cuts,” he said.
He urged Congress to legislate a 32-hour workweek, highlighting the growing imbalance between corporate profits and worker well-being. Sanders also pointed to studies showing that reduced work hours can improve mental health, job satisfaction, and overall efficiency.
The push for a four-day week has gained momentum globally, with several pilot programs reporting success. As AI continues to transform industries, Sanders insists it’s time to rethink traditional labor structures putting workers first in the future of work.
