Apple's App Store ecosystem enabled $1.3 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2024, according to an independent study by Professor Andrey Fradkin of Boston University and Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group. Remarkably, over 90% of these transactions incurred no commission fees for developers.
The study highlights significant growth across three key revenue categories:
1. Digital Goods and Services: $131 billion
2. Physical Goods and Services: Over $1 trillion
3. In-App Advertising: $150 billion
This surge is attributed to increased spending in online food delivery, pickup, and grocery services. Additionally, there was steady growth in digital content creation tools, such as photo and video editing apps.
Regionally, the U.S., China, and Europe experienced more than double the App Store-related billings and sales over the past five years. In India, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, travel apps emerged as significant spending categories.
Apple continues to invest in tools and programs to support developers globally, including over 40 local currencies and managing taxation across nearly 200 regions. The company has also prevented more than $9 billion in fraudulent transactions over the past five years.
Training initiatives, such as Developer Academies and Foundation Programs in the U.S., Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia, are helping students and professionals build skills in coding, design, and AI. These efforts are complemented by online resources like Apple Developer Forums, Pathways, and the Feedback Assistant.
