Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas: The boy who turned his mother’s IIT dream into a billion‑dollar AI company"

AI is Everywhere — and So Is Perplexity

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere, and there’s no doubt it has made our lives easier. If you’re familiar with AI, then chances are you already know about Perplexity — a name that’s become widely recognized among everyday users and tech experts alike.

In a tech world dominated by industry giants, Aravind Srinivas has carved out a space that’s uniquely his. In less than three years, he transformed Perplexity AI from just an idea into a global sensation. Valued at $18 billion as of now, the company is changing the way people access information.

But behind all that success lies a deeply personal story. Born in Chennai, Aravind grew up with one guiding voice — his mother’s. Her dream was simple: to see him study at IIT Madras. That dream became his mission. He went on to earn top honors, including a spot at the very same institution, and graduated in 2017 with dual degrees in Electrical Engineering.

Even though he couldn’t switch to a Computer Science major due to a slightly lower GPA, that didn’t stop him. Aravind taught himself AI, enrolled in online courses, competed in Kaggle challenges, and interned with legends like Yoshua Bengio.

His frustration with outdated search engines — ones that often felt clunky and unhelpful — sparked the idea for something better. That "something" became Perplexity AI: a conversational answer engine offering real-time, cited, and context-aware results.

But what truly sets Perplexity apart isn't just the tech. It's the mission. It's the independence. Aravind Srinivas has already turned down acquisition offers from giants like Apple and Meta — proving that building something meaningful doesn’t always mean selling out.
