Australia to ban YouTube accounts for kids under 16 by 2025, $50M fine for violators

Social media may seem cool — but not for kids, now is it?

Where do we draw the line? Is YouTube social media? Well, if you're watching content and interacting online, sounds pretty social.

And Australia seems to agree. They've just said no more YouTube for under-16s, joining TikTok, Insta, and the gang

Bad news for the kids? Maybe. But in the long run? Could be the reset we didn’t know we needed. Australia had earlier given YouTube a pass — but not anymore. After a nudge from the eSafety Commissioner, the government reversed that decision. Why? Because YouTube isn’t that different from other platforms when it comes to risks for kids.

Under the new law kicking in December 2025, platforms have to keep under-16s off their sites or pay up — and we’re talking fines up to $49.5 million. So yeah, the stakes are high.

PM Anthony Albanese didn’t sugarcoat it either: “I’m calling time on it.” He said tech companies need to care more about kids’ mental health and less about ad money. Fair, no?

Turns out, 37% of under-18s have seen harmful stuff on YouTube — more than any other platform. And 68% of 10–12-year-olds? Fully tuned in to YouTube. So, clearly not just a harmless video site. But of course, YouTube’s not happy. They’re like, “Hey, we’re not even social media — we’re a video-sharing platform!” They say teens use it to learn, not scroll. But critics are like: recommendation algorithms, comments, creators — that’s basically social media with extra steps.

And tech experts? They’re backing the move. Some say AI has only made content more addictive and harder to control. So this step is about putting guardrails in place before it gets messier. Now, YouTube’s reportedly prepping a court fight. They’ve been lobbying hard behind the scenes, trying to keep their “not social media” tag intact. But whether they win or not, one thing’s clear: the rules of the internet playground are changing — and the grownups are finally watching.
