Elon Musk's Starlink reportedly gets approval to roll out its satellite internet services in India

Elon Musk's Starlink has received regulatory approval to operate satellite internet services in India, marking a significant step after a nearly three-year application process. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) issued a letter of intent to Starlink, granting them the necessary licenses, although final authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) is still required.

This approval comes with specific conditions, including:

Security clearance for each satellite gateway.
Localization of lawful interception facilities.
Service restrictions during hostilities.
Data centers based within India.
Domain Name System (DNS) resolution within India.
Local manufacturing.
Data localization.
Use of domestic navigation systems.
Cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
Starlink has also formed partnerships with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to expand its reach in India. These collaborations aim to leverage Jio's extensive mobile network and Airtel's retail presence to offer Starlink's services to a broader customer base, including in remote and underserved areas.
