Microsoft Introduces Edit, an Open-Source Command Line Text Editor for Windows at Build 2025

Microsoft has introduced a new command-line text editor called Microsoft Edit, designed to replace the decades-old Notepad-based edit.com tool. The new editor is included in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26020, available through the Canary Channel.

What is Microsoft Edit?
Microsoft Edit is a lightweight, modern text editor that runs directly from the command line. Unlike the old edit.com utility that relied on MS-DOS and 16-bit architecture, the new tool is built for the current Windows environment and supports modern development workflows.

Key Features:
Command Line Based: Works directly from Windows Terminal or Command Prompt, offering fast, keyboard-driven editing.
Syntax Highlighting: Supports syntax coloring for multiple programming languages.
Lightweight and Fast: Optimized for speed and simplicity, similar to other command-line editors like Vim or Nano.
Modern Interface: Despite being a CLI tool, it has been designed with a cleaner interface suited for coding and configuration edits.

Availability
Currently, Microsoft Edit is only available for users enrolled in the Windows Insider Program under the Canary Channel. It’s expected to roll out more broadly with future updates to Windows 11.

The introduction of Microsoft Edit shows Microsoft’s commitment to improving its development tools and offering alternatives that suit modern developer needs within the Windows environment.
