Google I/O 2025: Beam announced, aims to make 3D video conferencing a reality

At Google I/O 2025, the company introduced a groundbreaking new project called Beam, aiming to revolutionize video communication through immersive 3D video conferencing technology.

Beam is designed to make virtual meetings feel more lifelike by creating realistic, spatial representations of participants. Instead of flat video feeds, users will appear in 3D with accurate depth and perspective, allowing for more natural and engaging interactions.

The technology is built on advanced AI, computer vision, and real-time rendering capabilities. Beam captures facial expressions, gestures, and even body language to simulate the presence of someone in the same room, enhancing remote collaboration.

One of Beam’s major innovations is its use of multiple camera angles and spatial mapping to generate a 3D model of a person in real-time. This model can be projected into virtual environments, whether it’s a home office or a virtual boardroom.

The goal is to eliminate the flat, disconnected feel of current video calls by offering a more dynamic and emotionally resonant experience. Beam could be particularly useful in fields like remote work, education, telemedicine, and virtual events.

Google plans to roll out Beam to developers and enterprise partners initially, with a broader consumer release expected later. The project signals Google’s commitment to redefining human connection through technology and may set a new standard for how people meet and communicate virtually.
