Rinku Hooda won gold in the men’s F46 javelin at the World Para Athletics Championship in Delhi with a championship record throw of 66.37 m, despite a childhood accident that cost him his left arm above the elbow, an impairment that deprived him of the stability normally provided by the left-side block in javelin technique. At age 3, he had been injured when he climbed onto a tractor and came into contact with a three-blade fan, losing his left limb. His coach Dharmendra Kumar explained that, since Hooda lacks the left arm, they focused intensely on building core strength, explosive power, and using his lower stump and feet to compensate for balance in his throws. Hooda, who started javelin in 2013, edged out competitors such as Paris Paralympics silver medallist Ajeet Singh Yadav and world record holder Sundar Singh Gurjar, and said while he had hoped for a world record, he is savoring this gold and aims next to cross 68–69 m at the Para Asian Games.
