Former England captain Michael Atherton has expressed his surprise over Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from Test cricket. He described it as unexpected, especially given Rohit’s strong form and his influential role in the Indian team.
Atherton acknowledged Rohit’s contributions as a top-order batter and captain, noting that his presence had brought stability and flair to the Indian Test lineup. He mentioned that Rohit still seemed to have plenty to offer in the longest format, which made the retirement all the more surprising.
While reflecting on Rohit's Test career, Atherton praised his adaptability and composure, especially in overseas conditions. He also highlighted Rohit’s leadership qualities and the way he led the team during transitions, particularly after Virat Kohli stepped down from captaincy.
Atherton admitted that while players have personal reasons for stepping away, Rohit’s exit from the Test arena will leave a notable gap in the Indian side, both as an opener and as a senior figure in the dressing room.
Rohit Sharma's retirement marks the end of an important chapter in Indian Test cricket, and his absence will surely be felt as the team moves forward into a new era.
