India struck early with Mohammed Siraj removing Travis Head in the 10th over as Australia were 61-1 at that point, and Head had just become the fastest Australian to reach 3,000 ODI runs. Australia’s openers had begun steadily, with Travis Head and captain Mitchell Marsh showing promise, but the early breakthrough from Siraj gave India some momentum as they looked to avoid a series whitewash.
