Former match referee Chris Broad revealed that during his 21-year tenure with the International Cricket Council (ICC), he was once instructed to “be lenient” and “find some time because it’s India” when officiating a match in which the Indian team, led by Sourav Ganguly, was behind the required over rate. Although the situation warranted a fine, he was reportedly told to adjust the figures to avoid penalizing the team. Broad added that when the same issue occurred in the following match, he sought guidance and was told to go ahead with the penalty, showing inconsistency and political influence in decision-making. He further stated that as India’s financial influence in cricket grew, the ICC became increasingly political, and he expressed relief at being out of the system after his contract ended in 2024.
