R Ashwin slams India for underutilising Kuldeep Yadav: It's our obsession with batting

They say criticism is the first step to improvement — and R Ashwin seems to be taking that to heart. The former India spinner has openly criticised the team management for sidelining Kuldeep Yadav during the ongoing Test series against England.

Despite several injuries in the squad, Kuldeep — fit, in form, and a proven match-winner — was not picked for the fourth Test in Manchester. And Ashwin calls it what it is: injustice.

According to him, it’s India’s obsession with batting depth and greed for an extra 20–30 runs that’s clouding their judgment. “Those tricks don’t work anymore,” Ashwin said bluntly.

He explained that modern-day pitches are flatter and less helpful for bowlers. So instead of packing the tail with run-hitters, India needs actual wicket-takers who can turn matches. Sacrificing a bowler like Kuldeep, he believes, is a step in the wrong direction.

Meanwhile, England are making the most of these missteps. By the end of Day 2, they were just 133 runs behind India’s first-innings total of 358 — firmly in control and punishing every missed opportunity.
