'Friendship still very strong': Sachin Tendulkar continues to support Vinod Kambli

Childhood promises are fragile things, but Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli proved that some bonds are built to outlast the glitter and heartbreak of fame. Their legendary 664 run stand in school cricket still sparkles in memory, a feat that announced them as prodigies destined to take over the game. And while their careers unfolded on very different paths, their friendship remains a living reminder that cricket is not just about runs and records, it is also about loyalty that refuses to dim.

Now, as Kambli continues his uphill battle against illness, his younger brother Virendra has revealed that Tendulkar’s presence is as steady as ever. Sachin still picks up the phone to check in on Kambli, often speaking with Andrea, Kambli’s wife, to ensure he is cared for. Virendra described this bond with warmth, recalling the easy camaraderie in the Mumbai dressing rooms where Sachin, Vinod, and he would sit together, laugh, and trade jokes between bites of food. The game may have been their stage, but friendship was their anchor.

Kambli’s story has always been one tinged with unfulfilled promise. While Tendulkar soared to godlike heights, Kambli’s career stalled after an electric start. Yet even as the cricketing world moved on, Sachin never did. That constancy now matters more than any trophy

Virendra offered cautious hope about his brother’s recovery after a brain clot left him hospitalised months ago. Kambli, he said, is regaining strength at home, though speech remains a struggle. It will take time, but his fighting spirit is unbroken. Virendra is confident that the man who once dazzled with effortless flair on the pitch will find his way back, if not to the crease, then at least to the rhythm of a full life.

In Tendulkar’s loyalty, cricket finds another kind of heroism.
