Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma promotes
Gamocha sales and distribution, announces
future sales centers at Assam Bhavan

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted the increasing recognition of the traditional Assamese 'Gamocha' in states like Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. He has encouraged the Chief Ministers of these states to procure Gamochas directly from Assam. To support local weavers, the Assam government launched the 'Swanirbhar Naari' scheme, which ensures fair pricing by purchasing Gamochas directly from weavers at fixed rates, eliminating intermediaries.

This year, the government procured 6.5 lakh Gamochas and plans to increase this to 10 lakh next year. Additionally, plans are underway to establish Gamocha sales centers at every Assam Bhavan to further promote distribution. In a recent video conference with district officials, Sarma also reviewed the distribution of sanction letters for the first installment of funds under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) to 3,88,358 beneficiaries statewide, with the event scheduled for March 19.
