This common supplement could lower vitamin D levels in the body, says study

A new study has revealed that the commonly used plant-based supplement vitamin D2 might actually lower the body’s overall vitamin D levels instead of improving them. While both D2 and D3 are used to treat or prevent vitamin D deficiency, researchers found that D2 is significantly less effective in maintaining healthy vitamin D status. Unlike vitamin D3, which helps sustain optimal levels for bone health, immunity, and muscle function, D2 may reduce the concentration of active vitamin D in the blood over time. The findings highlight the importance of choosing the right supplement form, as many plant-based or fortified foods rely on D2, which may not provide the same health benefits as D3 derived from animal or synthetic sources.
