A urologist suggests that guarding prostate health, and lowering the chances of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer, is strongly tied to diet: include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich foods and cut out pro-inflammatory ones. Specifically, foods like turmeric (curcumin), cooked tomatoes (rich in lycopene), cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower), berries and antioxidant-rich local fruits (e.g. guava, pomegranate), legumes and soy products, and fatty fish (for omega-3s) are recommended for their potential protective effects. At the same time, one should limit or avoid red and processed meats, high-fat dairy, deep fried or charred foods, refined carbohydrates and sugars, excess salt, and heavily processed or packaged foods. Achieving a healthy prostate also depends on lifestyle: maintaining healthy weight, regular exercise, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, and getting routine medical checkups including PSA screening when advised.
