Halloween 2025: 5 sugary treats to avoid, especially for children

With Halloween around the corner, the article warns parents and caregivers of five types of excessively sugary treats children should avoid: black-licorice sweets (which contain glycyrrhizin and can disturb fluid/electrolyte balance), highly acidic sour or powdered sherbet candies (which erode tooth enamel and cause rapid sugar spikes), oversized high-calorie chocolate or candy bars (which pack in sugar, fat and calories), sticky gummies and chewables that cling to teeth (raising cavity risk), and candies loaded with artificial dyes or marketed as “sugar-free” gimmicks (which may cause gastrointestinal distress and have little nutritional value). It suggests healthier swaps like dark-chocolate squares, yogurt-covered raisins, lightly sweetened popcorn, rice-cakes with nut-butter and banana, or homemade trail-mix with nuts and dark-chocolate chips to keep the festive spirit while reducing sugar load and dental/health risks.
