Silent heart attacks in women: Cardiologist shares overlooked warning signs

A leading cardiologist, Jeremy London, has raised awareness about how heart attacks in women often go unrecognised because their symptoms are subtler and different from the classic chest-crushing pain seen in men. He explains that women may experience chest pressure rather than intense pain, and frequently manifest signs such as shortness of breath, unexplained fatigue spanning days or weeks, nausea or vomiting (often misinterpreted as a stomach issue), dizziness, cold clammy sweating or a sudden sense of anxiety or impending doom. He emphasises that after menopause women face increased risk, thanks in part to declining oestrogen, and other key risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, family history of heart disease, stress and depression. London stresses the importance of both women and healthcare providers recognising these “soft” warning signs and acting swiftly by knowing personal risk profiles, adopting heart-healthy lifestyles (exercise, good diet, stress management) and seeking medical help at the earliest sign of trouble rather than assuming symptoms will pass.
