Vitamin D and Sun Exposure: The Right Time to Reap the Benefits Without Skin Damage

Vitamin D, vital for bone health, immunity, and overall wellness, is best absorbed through direct sunlight. However, balancing sun exposure with skin safety is crucial. Experts recommend stepping out between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. to maximise Vitamin D synthesis while minimising the risk of UV damage.

During these early hours, UVB rays are present in adequate amounts to aid Vitamin D production, but the intensity is lower, reducing the risk of sunburn and long-term skin harm. Around 10–30 minutes of sun exposure, depending on skin tone and region, is generally sufficient.

Midday sun, though rich in Vitamin D potential, brings stronger UV radiation, which can accelerate skin ageing and increase cancer risks. Dermatologists advise avoiding direct sun during peak hours without protection. A morning walk, short sunbath, or balcony break could be your healthiest dose of sunshine.
