Appendix Cancer Rates Quadruple in Millennials, Experts Urge Vigilance

A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine has revealed a sharp rise in appendix cancer among younger Americans. For those born between 1985 and 1990, incidence has quadrupled, while individuals born 1980–85 saw a threefold increase, compared to the 1945 cohort

Though still rare just one to two cases per million annually—this uptrend mirrors early-onset surges seen in colorectal and pancreatic cancers. Vague symptoms like dull pain in the lower right abdomen, bloating, changes in bowel habits, mild anemia, and unexplained weight loss often delay diagnosis.

Experts warn that half of appendix cancer cases are identified late, after disease spreads, underscoring the need for heightened awareness. They recommend timely medical checks for persistent symptoms, emphasizing that early detection significantly improves outcomes.
