Making impulsive decisions? THIS beverage you are drinking at night is to blame for!

Our body deserves nothing but the best, because every choice we make — from our habits to our late-night cravings — can ripple into big consequences. And sometimes, though it might sound unbelievable, the things we eat and drink can sneak their way into our decision-making process, tilting the scales between sensible and “what on earth was I thinking?”

Turns out, that innocent-looking cup of coffee you sip at night to “just stay awake a little longer” might be plotting against you. A new study by researchers at the University of Texas at El Paso has found that drinking coffee at night can crank up your impulsive behaviour — the kind that can make you act before you think, and maybe even regret it later.

The research team tested this on fruit flies , which actually share a lot of genetic and neural similarities with us humans. They found that when the flies had caffeine at night, they were less able to control their reactions, even in unpleasant situations — choosing reckless flight over self-preservation.

Before you roll your eyes at the idea of “flies and coffee,” remember this: caffeine is the world’s most consumed psychoactive substance, with about 85% of adults in the U.S. regularly drinking it. The scientists warn that similar effects could easily show up in humans — especially night-shift workers, healthcare professionals, or military personnel who depend on caffeine after dark to push through.

So, the next time you’re about to reach for that 10 p.m. coffee thinking it’s your productivity saviour, remember — it might just be your brain’s little villain in disguise. Sometimes, the best decision you can make is to not give your decision-making a caffeine rush at all.
