Is lemon water actually beneficial for health? Top Harvard ...

Does lemon water really deserve all the hype it’s been swimming in since way before Instagram reels were even a thing? If you’ve been sipping on that tangy little potion like it’s your daily detox pass, thinking it’s the shortcut to a cleaner, shinier you—hold up. Here’s some good news (with a dash of reality). Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, just weighed in—and yes, he brought the science receipts.

Hydration? Nailed it.
If your main goal is to stay hydrated, lemon water gets a gold star. Dr. Sethi points out that nearly 75% of adults are low-key dehydrated. Adding lemon makes water more appealing, which means you’re more likely to sip—and your digestion, focus, and energy will thank you.

Vitamin C queen.
One lemon = around 35mg of vitamin C. That’s nearly 40% of your daily dose. Great for your immune system, collagen (hello, glowing skin), and better iron absorption.

Digestion boost (for some).
Lemon water might help people with low stomach acid by gently nudging the gut into gear before meals. It’s not magic, but some do feel less bloated and more regular.

But careful—warm, not boiling.
If you’re a warm lemon water girly, don’t pour boiling water straight on the lemon. Vitamin C taps out above 70°C. Let the water chill a bit before you squeeze it in, or you’re just sipping sour vibes.

Reflux squad, beware.
For folks with GERD (roughly 1 in 5), lemon water can stir up trouble—think bloating or that annoying burn. Dr. Sethi says: skip it on an empty stomach if that’s you.

Teeth, meet trouble.
With a pH of 2, lemon juice is no enamel’s BFF. Sip through a straw, don’t swish, and rinse with plain water after—unless you want your dentist to raise an eyebrow at your next visit.

Detox? Not exactly. We hate to break the i
nfluencer bubble, but lemon water doesn’t “detox” your body. Your liver and kidneys already do that job, beautifully. Lemon water just gives hydration and digestion a lil’ lift.

So is it worth the hype?
If it works for your body, then yes, lemon water can totally be a refreshing gut-friendly ritual. Just know it’s not a miracle drink—it’s more like a cute little sidekick in your wellness routine.
