East India’s Loom Legacy: 10 Sarees That Define the Region’s Craft

East India’s loom legacy spans cotton to tussar silk. Among everyday staples, Bengal’s Taant delivers airy cotton drapes with floral borders, while Garad’s ivory-red mulberry silk is reserved for puja rituals. For regal statements, silk Baluchari sarees unfurl epics on the pallu, and UNESCO-listed Dhakai Jamdani scatters floating motifs across gauzy fabric. Bihar contributes Bhagalpuri Tussar, prized for its gold-tinged texture. Odisha showcases technical mastery: Sambalpuri Ikat’s double tie-dye geometrics, Bomkai’s thread-and-embroidery tribal motifs, and organically dyed Kotpad cotton in earthy hues. Bengal’s rugged-elegant Matka silk, spun from leftover mulberry cocoons, bridges formal and casual wear. Completing the set, the modern Taant-Kantha fusion marries crisp cotton with linear hand-stitched narratives. Together these ten weaves frame a living museum of craft, climate and culture—proof that the subcontinent’s sartorial heritage is as varied as its geography.
