After Prada, Dior Faces Heat Over ₹1.67 Crore 'Mukaish' Coat with No Credit to Indian Artisans

Luxury label Dior is under fire for showcasing a ₹1.67 crore embroidered coat featuring intricate Mukaish work without acknowledging its Indian origins. The coat, part of Dior’s Fall 2024 collection, sparked controversy as fashion experts pointed out its uncanny resemblance to traditional Indian craftsmanship.

Mukaish embroidery, native to Lucknow, is known for its metallic detailing and has been practiced for centuries. Critics argue that Dior’s presentation lacked cultural attribution, overlooking the artisans who have kept this heritage alive.

This backlash follows Prada’s recent misstep with Kolhapuri chappals, drawing attention once again to the global fashion industry's pattern of cultural appropriation.

Calls are growing for luxury brands to credit and collaborate ethically with the communities they draw from. As Indian craftsmanship continues to influence global fashion, respect and recognition are no longer optional they're essential.
