Onion juice for hair growth: How to extract it, apply it and why Bollywood divas swear by it

When beauty talk turns to onion juice, the reaction is usually a wrinkled nose. Yet this humble kitchen staple has quietly earned cult status, endorsed by the likes of Bipasha Basu, Malaika Arora, Sonakshi Sinha, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Dimple Kapadia. Behind the strong smell lies a surprisingly effective formula for healthier, stronger hair.

Onions are packed with sulphur, a key component in collagen production that fortifies hair follicles. They also carry antioxidants and natural antibacterial properties, which keep the scalp clean, reduce dandruff, and improve blood flow. The result is an environment where hair grows thicker, shinier, and far less prone to breakage.

Making onion juice requires nothing more than a blender and patience. Chop red or yellow onions, blend into a pulp, and strain the liquid. For a gentler touch, mix in aloe vera or a drop of lavender oil to soften both the smell and the scalp. Apply only to the scalp, massage gently, and leave it on for twenty minutes before washing thoroughly. Twice a week is considered the sweet spot.

Consistency brings results. Many see baby hairs sprouting within two months of regular use. Celebrities vouch for it openly: Basu relies on onion juice for controlling hair fall, Arora credits it with post illness regrowth, while Sinha and Bhatia mix it into home remedies with coconut oil. Kapadia, still admired for her lustrous locks, lists it among her beauty essentials.

Onion juice may never be glamorous, but it is effective. For those willing to brave its pungency, the payoff is stronger, fuller hair. Sometimes beauty really is about enduring a little discomfort for visible rewards.
