Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer from Assam, died unexpectedly in a scuba diving accident in Singapore, and composer Anu Malik remembered him as a gentle, loving soul who had health problems, including sudden blackouts. Anu recalled they first worked together on the films Fiza, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon, and Mission Istanbul, with Garg singing in many Indian and regional languages (Assamese, Bengali, Manipuri, Boro, Marathi and Malayalam), and his stage performances were noted to be powerful. He also spoke of Garg’s attachment to his homeland—Garg often declined opportunities to permanently relocate to Mumbai, saying he would come and go as needed, and expressed more interest in doing social work in Assam. Anu Malik urged him to get his health checked when Garg told him about his blackout episode, but said that eventually they lost touch.
