Deepika Padukone has addressed the controversy surrounding her insistence on an 8-hour daily shooting limit following her departure from the films Spirit and Kalki 2, pointing out that although the film industry is often called an “industry,” it has never operated like one. She argued that many male superstars have long worked eight-hour days without it ever making news, and asserted that if her demand is perceived as “pushy” simply because she is a woman, so be it. Deepika said the time is ripe to instill more structure and organization into what she described as a disorganized industry. Her exit from Spirit was reportedly because she wanted to limit working hours to spend time with her daughter, Dua, and in the case of the Kalki 2898 AD sequel she was dropped after the producers expressed that the film required greater “commitment.” Meanwhile, she has begun work on King opposite Shah Rukh Khan and is slated to appear in Atlee’s upcoming film AA22×A6 alongside Allu Arjun.
