Mani Ratnam's gangster drama 'Thug Life', featuring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, premiered in theaters on June 5, 2025. The film is slated for an OTT release on Netflix on August 7, following an eight-week theatrical window.
Netflix secured the streaming rights in a significant deal, aiming to capitalize on the film's pan-Indian appeal. The movie will be available in multiple languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
'Thug Life' marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam after 37 years, since their collaboration on 'Nayakan' (1987). The film boasts a stellar cast, including Trisha Krishnan, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and Ali Fazal, with music composed by A.R. Rahman.
However, the film faced controversy in Karnataka due to Kamal Haasan's remark that "Kannada was born from Tamil," leading to a ban in the state.
Despite the regional setback, 'Thug Life' has generated significant buzz and is poised for a successful digital run.
