When Sanjay Leela Bhansali thought Jaya Bachchan ‘hated’ Aishwarya Rai-Salman Khan starrer ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’: ‘She saw the film and…’

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ — now that’s a name that instantly brings back memories. The soulful music, the heart-wrenching storyline, the visuals that felt like paintings in motion — it was cinematic magic. But let’s be honest, that love triangle still stings a little, doesn’t it?

Released back in 1999, this Sanjay Leela Bhansali classic wasn’t just a film — it was a feeling. And Bhansali, well, his name is practically synonymous with grandeur, drama, and pure art. But here’s something many don’t know — two decades later, some behind-the-scenes stories from the film’s journey are just as fascinating as the movie itself.

A Berlin invite — and a taxi ride that made it happen.
In an old interview on Star Talk, Bhansali opened up about how the film landed at the Berlin Film Festival. No big PR campaign. No high-profile pitch. Just one unexpected hero — a Mumbai taxi driver.

According to Bhansali, Dorothy, a delegate from Berlin, was in India scouting for films. And while she was here, a local cabbie told her, “Memsahab, aap yeh picture dekho humare saath.”
She took his advice, watched the film with him, and he sat beside her, patiently explaining every emotion, every nuance — and by the end, she was smitten. That was it. The cab ride that took a Bollywood film to Berlin.

Then there’s another key player in this journey — Jaya Bachchan. But her involvement wasn’t loud or obvious. Bhansali said she attended a private screening of the film before its release, came out with a faint smile, and left without a word. Naturally, he thought she hated it.

But weeks later, she called him. Her message? “You thought I didn’t like the film, but my way of showing appreciation was to quietly recommend it to the Berlin committee.”
Turns out, her silence wasn't disapproval — it was quiet support. Powerful, understated, and game-changing.

Since Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Bhansali has built an empire of beauty and emotion. From Devdas to Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, and the recent OTT series Heeramandi, his stories are big, bold, and breathtaking.

And he’s not done. Up next? Love & War, a star-studded saga featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal.

So, what started with a cab ride and a quiet recommendation has now become legend. Because behind all the glitter and drama, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam's journey to Berlin was rooted in connection, heart, and — like all great Bhansali tales — a little bit of magic.
