War 2 has finally hit the big screen. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, it swaggered into cinemas this morning, and early signs point to a promising start. The action-thriller is on track for an estimated Rs 30 crore opening, already pocketing Rs 6.16 crore India net across all languages, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
The film wasted no time crossing the Rs 5 crore mark with just morning shows and early ticket sales. As always, the real spike is expected during the evening and night rush, which traditionally deliver the bulk of first-day numbers. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 has drawn praise for its high-voltage action sequences, larger-than-life scale, and the magnetic pairing of Hrithik and Jr NTR. Still, some viewers have been less than enchanted, calling out the film’s formulaic storyline and uneven pacing. Social media has been equally split—ranging from “paisa vasool” to “strictly MID.”
But while War 2 makes a respectable start, it’s sharing its release day with a storm named Rajinikanth. His much-awaited Coolie has already surged ahead, grossing Rs 11.63 crore India net across all languages, thanks to the Superstar’s unmatched draw in the South.
With both films poised for a holiday boost this Independence Day weekend, trade analysts are predicting a combined Thursday haul of around Rs 80 crore. Friday’s national holiday could push those figures even higher.
For now, Coolie wears the crown, but if War 2 can ride a strong evening wave, the gap might just narrow. Either way, the box office is bracing for an action-packed face-off worthy of the long weekend.
