Rajnikanth’s ‘Coolie’ beats Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vikram: to become 9th biggest Tamil film in North America with just premiere day numbers

Superstar Rajinikanth—just saying the name summons visions of that swagger, the twirl of his glasses, and that unmistakable grin. Once again, he has proved he is worth every decibel of the hype. With a casual flick of his metaphorical sunglasses, he has sent the cash registers ringing with Coolie, his latest spectacle directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film has stormed into North America, raking in a jaw-dropping USD 2.9 million from just its premiere day shows, according to distributor Prathyangira Cinemas.

What makes this opening more delicious than a perfectly timed Rajini punchline is that Coolie has already bagged the ninth spot among Tamil cinema’s biggest North American grossers. In doing so, it nudged Kamal Haasan’s Vikram (USD 2.84 million) aside—a film also directed by Kanagaraj—and sailed past Rajini’s own Vettaiyan (USD 2.83 million) and Petta (USD 2.51 million). The twist? Those films worked weeks to hit those numbers. Coolie did it in hours.

The anticipation was almost inevitable. Kanagaraj is one of Tamil cinema’s most coveted directors, and pairing him with Rajinikanth was the cinematic equivalent of lighting a fuse. Advance bookings went wild, fan excitement hit fever pitch, and the opening-day frenzy was baked in long before the first frame rolled.

With day one not yet over, Coolie is on track to leap into eighth place by the time final figures arrive. If the glowing audience chatter is any sign, this might just be the beginning of a chart climb that could take it into the coveted top five.

Rajinikanth hasn’t merely arrived at the North American box office—he has owned it, tipped his glasses, and left everyone wondering how high he plans to climb next.
