Beating your own record and then smashing it to bits—that’s Rajinikanth for you. His latest spectacle, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has already stirred up advance booking numbers so massive they could take a swing at the milestone he set back in 2018 with 2.0.
For the record, 2.0, Shankar’s sci-fi extravaganza with Akshay Kumar, opened to a thunderous Rs 60.25 crore in India across all languages on its very first day. Now, six years later, Coolie is revving at full throttle to match or even top that figure.
Early numbers are jaw-dropping: Rs 37.2 crore from 1.73 million tickets sold—without even counting block seats. Factor those in, and the tally soars to Rs 46.36 crore before a single scene has lit up the big screen. The Tamil version is leading the pack with Rs 27.92 crore from over 1.29 million tickets across 7,235 shows, while Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada versions round out a nationwide total of 13,083 screenings.
The hype? Completely justified. Rajinikanth teaming up with Kanagaraj, one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable hitmakers, was always going to send fans into a frenzy. Add a glittering ensemble featuring Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and a surprise Aamir Khan, and you’ve got a pan-Indian carnival.
By 10 AM on release day, Coolie had already raked in Rs 14.25 crore. Trade analysts say that with the right momentum, it could breach the Rs 60 crore mark, becoming Rajinikanth’s biggest opener ever. Even if it falls short thanks to a clash with War 2, it’s still poised to secure second place in his glittering record book.
