Independence Day weekend isn’t just about hoisting flags and feeling patriotic—it’s about the box office fireworks ready to light up the holiday. In the red corner, we’ve got Rajinikanth roaring in with Coolie. In the blue corner, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR are locked and loaded for War 2, the latest spy-universe spectacle. Two massive films, one release date. So, popcorn in hand, let’s wait and watch—who’s going to steal the show? Advance bookings have already started to hint at the winner—at least for now. Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has stormed ahead with ₹1.81 crore in confirmed domestic sales, and blocked seats pushing totals to around ₹5.09 crore. Kerala is leading the charge with ₹96.5 lakh confirmed and over ₹3 crore blocked, followed closely by Tamil Nadu with ₹83.98 lakh confirmed and ₹2.01 crore blocked.
Overseas, it’s even bigger. Pre-sales for opening day have nearly touched ₹30 crore gross, with North America alone contributing $1.42 million—$1.12M from Tamil and $300K from Telugu versions. If the current pace holds, Coolie might just smash Leo’s record for the biggest Tamil debut internationally.
Meanwhile, War 2 is quietly building momentum. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the Hrithik-Jr NTR actioner has already clocked $310K in North America—$232K from Telugu and $78K from Hindi—six days before release. Indian bookings open on August 10, with a few theatres jumping in a day early. Add Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, and Anil Kapoor to the mix, and it’s set to be a pan-India spectacle.
One thing’s certain—this Independence Day weekend isn’t just a clash; it’s a cinematic collision. And when two giants hit the same date, the box office will either crown two winners… or leave one licking its wounds.
