Rajinikanth’s much-publicised action spectacle Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has crossed the two-week mark with collections of Rs 269.81 crore in India. The film, which heralds the superstar’s maiden collaboration with Kanagaraj, thundered into theatres with extraordinary numbers but is now negotiating uneven ground at the box office.
Opening on a wave of frenzy, Coolie made a historic Rs 65 crore on its first day, with Tamil Nadu unsurprisingly leading the charge. The film closed its opening week at an impressive Rs 229.65 crore, buoyed by Rajinikanth’s magnetic presence and a formidable cast that included Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and a cameo by Aamir Khan.
The second week, however, told a different tale. Collections declined sharply, sliding into single digits on most weekdays. A brief revival came over the weekend, with Rs 10.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 11.35 crore on Sunday, only to fall again to Rs 3.25 crore on Monday. The total after 15 days now stands at Rs 269.81 crore.
Critical and audience responses mirror the numbers: divided. Rajinikanth’s towering performance and Kanagaraj’s signature action flourishes have received due applause, yet the narrative has been faulted for not living up to the director’s previous successes. The climax reportedly delivered moments of exhilaration, though complaints of loopholes persist.
In essence, Coolie is both a showcase of Rajinikanth’s undimmed charisma and a reminder that star power alone cannot conceal the cracks in storytelling.
