'Coolie' box office collection day 1: Rajinikanth's action d ..

Rajinikanth—as colossal as the name sounds—has done it again. And no, he didn’t just release a film, he staged a full-blown cinematic coup. Call it art, call it dominance, call it whatever you want, but Lokesh Kanagaraj’s latest gangster action drama Coolie dropped on 14 August, the eve of Independence Day, and swaggered straight into box office history. Going head-to-head with War 2 on opening day, the Thalaivar didn’t just compete—he claimed the crown.

Early estimates from Sacnilk put Coolie among the biggest Tamil film openings ever. Tamil Nadu alone brought in a staggering Rs 28–30 crore gross, with Andhra Pradesh/Telangana adding Rs 16–18 crore, Karnataka Rs 14–15 crore, and Kerala about Rs 10 crore. Even the Hindi-speaking belt joined the frenzy with Rs 7–8 crore. That’s a jaw-dropping Rs 65 crore gross in India on Day 1.

Overseas, Rajini’s reign continued, pulling in around Rs 75 crore, which catapults the worldwide opening total to roughly Rs 140 crore.

Occupancy rates told the same story of total dominance—Tamil Nadu at 86.99% overall, peaking at 94% for night shows, Telugu markets roaring at 92.10%, and Karnataka hitting 71.37%. Even in the Hindi belt, the night shows spiked above 55%.

Oh, and that Aamir Khan cameo? It’s pure fan-service magic. The plot follows Devaraj “Deva,” a former coolie union leader investigating the suspicious death of his friend Rajasekhar, with an ensemble including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj.

With Independence Day energy, fan frenzy, and glowing reviews, Coolie isn’t just a film—it’s a box office siege in progress.
